Keratosis Pilaris is a skin condition prevalent in about 50% of the population yet, if you have this dry, bumpy skin condition you will find one is not spoilt for choice when it comes to product selection at drugstores.

After my visit to the dermatologist I came across the Avène Akérat 10 Body cream, specially targeted to Keratosis prone skin, which I used in conjunction with prescribed lotions from my dermatologist.

Here is a full review of the Avène Akérat 10 Body cream and information on how to treat Keratosis Pilaris.

Typically, Keratosis Pilaris is defined as over keratin production, thus becoming visible on the skin, resulting in blocked pores which appears as bumpy, red raises on the back of arms, also known as chicken skin – additionally, Keratin bumps are common on thighs, cheeks and legs and usually appears more severe with hormonal fluctuations and dryer, harsher weather both in summer and winter. If left untreated, you will find that these tiny bumps leave pigmentation on the skin.

Furthermore, skin is usually prone to larger visible pores and blackheads and whiteheads – but this is not related to an acne problem.

There is no known cure for Keratosis Pilaris however, there are known remedies, which treat this condition on an ongoing basis.

Key ingredients to look for in products related to treating Keratosis Pilaris are:

  • Salicylic acid
  • Topical sulphur
  • Lactic acid
  • Retinol
  • AHA’s & BHA’s
  • Effective moisturizing ingredients
  • Urea

Typically, these ingredients are found in acne products, which are generally effective in the ongoing treatment for Keratosis Pilaris, however harsher acne treatments can cause dry skin, which can irritate Keratosis, therefore it’s important to hydrate and moisturize your skin whilst on treatment for effective results.

Effective Treatments For Keratosis Pilaris include:

  • Visiting a dermatologist who can prescribe higher doses of effective ingredients to speed up the process of removing Keratosis Pilaris from your skin.
  • Washing with acne wash or sulphur soaps.
  • Applying specific creams twice a day to affected areas
  • Exfoliating areas of concern
  • Laser treatments
  • Removing gluten and dairy products from your diet

I would suggest the Avène Akérat 10 cream for maintenance during any Keratosis Pilaris treatment. This nourishing body lotion contains effective ingredients known to treat Keratosis Pilaris that include urea, lactic acid and salicylic acid.

Uses:

  • Provides instant relief to dry, itchy skin
  • A treatment over long – term to reverse the damages of dry, bumpy skin
  • Keeps skin nourished and smooth

Appearance:

Packaged in convenient lotion tubes, this body cream is white in appearance and creamy with a soft pleasant aroma.

Key Ingredients:

Avène products are rich in Avène Thermal Spring Water additionally, this cream is specifically formulated with ingredients known to ease the bumpy, itchy rash caused by Keratosis Pilaris; these ingredients include urea, lactic acid and salicylic acid.

Effectiveness:

Whilst what my dermatologist prescribed to for me for my Keratosis helped tremendously and speedily to remove my bumps – I found this formula too gritty and not moisturizing for continued use and I could only apply it to affected areas.

I didn’t want to use any lotion that could flare up my Keratosis again – I find that lotions with parabens and perfumes usually do this.

The Avène Akérat 10 maintained the Keratosis Pilaris treatment; I used it all over my body, which resulted in my skin being so soft and smooth. Honestly, my skin has never been softer. The last bit of any noticeable bumps was removed with everyday use over a period of two weeks and my skin looks noticeably healthier and feels smoother.

Ease Of Use:

As any body cream, the Avène Akérat is used normally – I mix it with the Avène Very High Protection Spray in SPF 50+ for daytime and use it twice daily.

200ml Retails from R249 – 95

Avène often has specials and free gifts that I love as I find all Avène products of a high quality and effective.
